Unicef
Around the world, children suffer from the effects of poverty and famine, and most are too young to be able to change their futures. They need someone to speak out on their behalf and, for the past 50 years, the United Nations Children’s Fund, or UNICEF, has been that voice. They focus strongly on the education for all the poorest children, giving them the best possible start to life. With the knowledge they gain from the educational assistance UNICEF provides, children in Third World countries have the ability to escape the clutches of poverty and benefit their entire families. UNICEF also struggles for greater gender equality; in many of the world’s poorest communities, girls are forbidden from attending school and are bound into the shackles of oppression that is forced upon them under the banner of tradition.
UNICEF does not just help children in need in poor countries. They play a huge role in the safety of abused children in the UK. They work extensively with the government and the police forces to ensure action is taken rapidly to get children away from violent and exploitative families. Of course, in their struggle to improve the lives of children all over the world, UNICEF also put in a great deal of effort in the fight against the spread of AIDS in poor countries. It is a well known fact that Africa has been ravaged by AIDS. However, we must spare a thought for the children who are born into single parent families where the adult is suffering from AIDS. It is very common for children younger than 13 years old to be tasked with the care of their siblings and their sick parents. It is with UNICEF’s help that this can become a manageable task and, with time and medication, these children can begin to live normal lives.
UNICEF has a variety of gifts you can purchase for someone, ranging from a donation to gifts that promote fair trade. Your gift to a loved one of a donation to UNICEF can give a child a new beginning and a new life.
